Insulated Undergate and Hookup Wire Insulated electric fence wire, whose insulation can contain up to 20 kilovolts, has several uses. Unlike ordinary extension cord (which cannot contain very high voltages) it can carry an electric fence charger’s output from the charger to the fence. It can also connect the charger’s ground terminal to one or more ground rods. It can carry an electric charge from the charged line to various components of electric fence gates. And since it can be buried underground, it can also carry the fence’s electric charge underneath gates from one side of the gate to the other. In general, the insulated wire should have a larger diameter (smaller gauge) or else should be made of a more conductive metal (aluminum or copper) the greater the power of the charger, distance to be traveled, and length of fence served. In all cases where undergate and hookup wire needs to be joined to metal wire or polywire, do this with split-bolt clamps (product 08-33). Simply remove the nut, place the wires to be connected in the cleft of the split bolt, and tighten the nut enough to form a strong electrical union. Another product that can be used the same way as insulated undergate and hookup wire is 02-85. This is an open tube of heavy insulation—essentially insulated undergate and hookup wire without the wire. To use this product for gate-related or hookup purposes, simply cut off an appropriate length and string metal wire of your choice through the tubing—thereby keeping the metal wire safely insulated.
Weed Burden Protection If your fence's lowest run of wire or polyconductor is likely to contact weeds, brush, or other objects that will drain away the fence's charge, consider using this energy limiter (product 06-14). It can keep power on the fence's other runs by limiting the amount of charge allowed to flow onto the lowest run. Install one energy limiter at each point where power is fed into the lowest run. |
