Catalog > Electric Fence Conductors > Polywire, Polytape, Polyrope, and Reels Polywire About polyconductors: Polyconductors are made of polyethylene or other synthetic products that are interwoven with stainless steel, copper, or aluminum wires to conduct an electric charge. They have two advantages over bare metal electric fence wires, because (1) they are more visible to the deer and other animals being trained to avoid the fenced-in area, and (2) they can be reeled up and unreeled repeatedly, allowing the fence to be put up and taken down or moved about. Electric Fence Polywire Regarding cost and quality, the Regency polywire (product 02-67) is economical, being less than half the price of the other polywires listed, and is also of acceptable quality. However, it is not as durable or conductive as the Baygard products (02-10 thru 02-13), which are suited to long-distance electric fences. All of these Baygard conductors have six 0.4mm aluminum wires, come with a 5-year UV warranty, and have an expected life of 6-7 years. Because aluminum conducts electricity ten times better than steel, these Baygard polywires can carry a charge effectively for many miles.
Electric Fence Polytape, 0.5" Electric deer fences should only be visible to the point where deer have a general idea of where they are. They should not be so visible that deer find it easy to precisely locate, jump over, and avoid them. This sort of marginal visibility is much better served by metal wire or polywire than it is by narrow polytape, wide polytape, or polyrope. We offer these latter products on this website because some of our customers seek not to exclude deer but to contain livestock-a purpose admirably served by these more visible polyproducts. (A wider selection of livestock products may be found at The Horse Fence Store.) The half-inch polytapes offered here come in 656 or 1,312 foot lengths with stainless steel, tinned copper, or aluminum wires-both tinned copper and aluminum being more conductive than stainless steel. Suggested maximum fence lengths for products 02-14, and 02-49 thru 02-51 is 2,000 feet; for 02-52 it is 3,000 feet; and for products 02-18 and 02-19 it is several miles. ![]() ![]()
Electric Fence Polytape, 1.5" Broad polytape, the most visible of all the polyconductors, is also quite expensive. The polytapes offered here include some of the most affordable and best to be found anywhere. Regency product 02-38 has 10 stainless steel wiere 0.25mm thick and is designed to cope with relatively windy sites by allowing the wind to blow through it, thereby reducing its wind resistance. Dare product 02-20 has 15 stainless steel wires 0.2 mm thick. Regency product 02-41 has 15 stainless steel wires 0.25mm thick and a 700-pound breaking strength. And Baygard product 02-22 ("Equitape") has 8 aluminum wires 0.4mm thick, a 5-year warranty, and an expected life of 6-7 years. Suggested maximum electric fence lengths are 2,500 feet for product 02-20, 3,500 feet for product 02-38, 5,000 feet for product 02-41, and several miles for product 02-22.
Electric Fence Polyrope, 0.25" Generally speaking, polyrope is considerably more visible than polywire but less visible than half-inch polytape. This is true of all the polyropes offered here except for product 02-58, which is colored brown to help it blend into the background. All of these polyropes contain 6 stainless steel wires that are either 0.2mm or 0.3mm thick. Those with 0.2mm wires are not recommended for fence over 3,000 feet long; the maximum recommended length for those with 0.3mm wires is 5,000 feet. Polyconductor Reels If one is stringing a quarter-mile or more of polyconductor, these reels will quickly pay for themselves in saved time and convenience. Please note, however, that they have different holding capacities. The small Dare reel (01-38) will hold up to a quarter-mile of polywire; the large Dare reel (01-40) and the Baygard reel (02-26) will hold up to a quarter-mile of half-inch polytape or 500 feet of 1.5-inch polytape; and the Speedrite geared reel (02-27-on sale) will hold up to 656 feet of 1.5-inch polytape. |
