Catalog > Electric Fence Insulators > Round Posts Basic Insulator for Wire, Polywire, and Polyrope About Round Post Insulators: The fastest-selling round post insulator is Dare’s WESTERN-RP (Products 7-1 and 7-2), because it works well, is economical, and is well-suited to hanging straight fence lines of wire, polywire, or polyrope on round posts from 1/4" to 9/16" diameter. The best rod insulator is the more expensive Dare XLRP (products 7-3 through 7-5) because it is bigger (made for round posts from 1/4" to 3/4" diameter), more adaptable (accepting not just wire, polywire, and polyrope but also polytape up to 1.5" wide), and more versatile (holding all these conductors securely, and so being able to reliably hold a conductor on a fence that is going around a bend or turning a right angle). The only non-Dare insulator in this group (product 7-6) is a small, specialized insulator that clips onto a three-eighths inch rod and is suited to carrying wire, polywire, or 0.5" polytape. Basic Rod Insulator for Wire, Polywire, and Polyrope This insulator, the plastic screw-on Dare WESTERN-RP, is a good economical choice for rods up to 9/16" diameter and for wire, polywire, or polyrope. To deal with bends and corners, a good strategy is to use steel T-posts or U-posts and corner knobs (product 7-13), because flexible 3/8" and 1/2" fiberglass posts deal poorly with bends and corners. Available in yellow or black. Quality Rod Insulator for all Conductors For round posts, the plastic screw-on Dare XLRP is probably the best all-around insulator money can buy. It can accommodate posts from 1/4" to 7/8" diameter, all conductors except polytape over 1.5" wide, and all fence configurations including turns and corners. To deal with these latter, the XLRP can be teamed effectively with 11/16" fiberglass posts, which are much less flexible than their 3/8" and 1/2" cousins, and thus more able to bear the load at a turn or corner without major bending. Available in white or yellow. Small Insulator for 3/8" Fiberglass Rods and Wire, Polywire, or 0.5" Polytape This specialized plastic insulator is durable and holds conductors well–better than the WESTERN-RP above. However, if you are installing them in cold weather it’s a good idea to get a few more than you need, because the plastic tends to become brittle in winter and can occasionally split when the insulator is being snapped on. |
