Catalog > Electric Fence Testers (Voltage Readers) Simple Positive Voltage Reader About Fence Testers: An electric fence voltage reader (not an ordinary volt-meter, which won’t work) is an essential tool for anyone who wants to install and maintain an electric fence, because it can be used to tell whether the fence is working. Simple Positive Voltage Reader This very basic voltage reader lights up when it detects a positive voltage, and it’s wonderfully affordable. The problem is, it won’t tell whether the voltage is high enough (at least 2.5 kilovolts for nose or tongue contact, at lease 5 kilovolts for contact elsewhere) to give your fence a reasonable chance of shocking deer. Five-light Voltage Reader This voltage reader has a series of five lights that go on when particular voltage levels are reached. Thus, it will reliably tell whether a fence has at least 1, 2, 3, 4, or 5 kilovolts on the line. While this information is still limited, in most cases it is probably all one needs to know.
Digital and Analog Voltage Readers Beloved by electric fence owners, these fence testers really tell what's happening. Applied to a charger or fence, they give a numerical readout of any output to the nearest 100 volts up to a maximum of 9.9 volts. Like any good tool they cost money; but for those seriously concerned with maintaining an electric fence, they are well worth it. We list four of these voltage readers because it is best to get a reader made by the same company that makes your charger. This avoids the possibility that technical differences in the outputs of different chargers could influence the reading. |
